What is "Fête de la Musique"?
Created in Paris in 1982, the "FETE DE LA MUSIQUE" immediately became a hugely popular event in France. Every year, on June 21st, the first day of summer, French city streets become crowded with people and music. Now more than 350 cities around the world take part in this annual musical event. On that very day, all musicians, professionals and amateurs, old and young, no matter their musical style, perform in free outdoor concerts, celebrating music with the public.
Because the "FETE DE LA MUSIQUE" has become such a strong and celebrated tradition in France, we have decided to bring the concept to Shanghai and share it with the city, which is hosting the 2010 Expo and bringing in visitors from around the world. The Mayor immediately supported the project and the Culture Bureau of Shanghai, the Shanghai Culture Houses and our partner districts gave us their full support. Of course, the concept has to be adapted to the local context, but the spirit will be there. On June 20th, more than 40 groups of musicians, both professionals and amateurs, Chinese and international, adults and children, rockers, DJs, jazzmen and chorists, will perform in various places throughout the city. On June 21st, the "FETE" will continue at the Expo Site and the French Pavilion, as a musical celebration of France's National Day at the Expo.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all our partners, to our sponsors, to individuals like Mr William Doo, and to volunteers for their help and commitment.
Enjoy these two days with us,celebrate music and “que la FETE commence"!
